Vancouver 2010 - Red White and Gold for Canada

Well unless you have been living under a rock the past 17 days, you have probably been glued to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games from Vancouver.  And what an Olympics it was.  Canada walked away with 14 gold medals, a new world record previously set by Russia and once tied by Norway.  And what a better way to set that record than by beating the USA with an overtime goal in men’s hockey.

I have always enjoyed the Olympics but the 2010 games will always hold a special place in my memory.  Whether it was Alex Bilodeaus first gold medal on Canadian soil, Joannie Rochettes triumph through over whelming adversity, or Jon Montgomery’s famous stroll through Whistler with a pitcher of beer, these games had it all.  They were an emotional roller coaster, and it was one heck of a ride.

The games started on a somber note with the tragic death of the Georgian luger and before the games started, criticism of VANOC and the venues began.  Then there was the cauldron malfunction, the bad weather and slow start to Canada's medal count after all the talk of Own The Podium. It all seemed to build on that ever growing doubt that this could go down as the worst winter Olympics in history.

But something amazing was happening and even from my couch I could see it.  No matter what event or who was competing in it, our national pride was swelling.  It was as though we didn’t care about the medals, but more so to show the world who we are and why we love Canada.  Sure more than ever we put an emphasis on winning, and I totally agree that there is nothing wrong with striving to be the best in the world.  But what was amazing to watch was that even in failure, our resolve and collective love for our country was stronger than ever.  We cheered hard and loud for all the worlds athletes, and and even harder for our own.  The fans created an amazing atmosphere that spread across the entire nation and it was even something the IOC president said was "...a real credit to Canadians".

Personally I have never been prouder to be a Canadian.  We have all had that national pride; Vancouver 2010 just gave us a chance to really show it.  And show it we did. VANOC president John Furlong said it best " I believe we Canadians tonight are stronger, more united, more in love with our country and more connected with each other than ever before."

Globe and Mail writer Stephen Brunt created an amazing video essay that truly captures how these games have impacted Canada. If you missed the video Sunday night watch it right now and send it to everyone you know.

The New Jerry's Food Emporium

You’ve heard the slogan before.  Everyone Loves Jerry’s. Well guess what? Now you will love them even more!  Jerry’s has recently undergone some major changes to not only its menu but also its entire look and I must say, it has been for the better.

I will have to admit that the old Jerry’s holds a special spot in my heart. I found myself there many times to recharge with a hearty breakfast after a long night of what ill refer to as “studying” during my University career.  It had become a local staple for my friends and myself and I know this was the same for many of Saskatoon’s residents.  There is something special about Jerry’s and how it is uniquely Saskatoon.  And as the city changes and grows, its only fitting Jerry’s does as well.

Jerry’s transformation may seemed to have happened over night, but as Jerry said, it has been nine crazy months but the end result is well worth all the work.  Things really got rolling when Meredith Heron from the hit show Restaurant Makeover took a visit to Jerry’s and after a day and a half had an all-new plan ready to go. On Jan 24th the reno’s began and in 8 short but hectic days, the new Jerry’s was unveiled.

So other than a facelift what can you expect from the new Jerry’s? Firstly Jerry’s now has its own bakery! That’s right, look out Tim Horton, Jerry is coming. World-class baker Mario Fortin from Quebec helped create 20 different made-from-scratch items ranging from breads, muffins, scones, brioche and even an energy bar!

Some other favorites on the new menu are the slow cooked pulled pork sandwich, a slow roast beef dip sandwich, and a Moroccan chicken sandwich. The sandwich is coated in its very own spice rub and each sandwich is served on a freshly baked ciabatta bun. After being privileged enough to sample these items I can easily say that they are all DELICIOUS! And don’t worry; the classic items such as the fish and chips haven’t gone anywhere.

Speaking of classic items, what about the ice cream and gelatos you ask? Well they are all still there of course, but they have added a new item for all you coffee lovers out there.  Take one latte and flavor it with your favorite gelato and what do you get? Well other than a party in your mouth, you get Jerry’s new Gelatte, a soon to be Saskatoon staple.

I could go on and on about all the changes and items at the new Jerry’s but just writing this has made me hungry and the next hour before lunch will be a struggle.  Take a look at our fan page on facebook as we have posted some pics of the new Jerry’s but if I managed to do my job well, you should already be there!

Used to love this place hate it now the decor is nice but too nice to want to take my 2 year old to. the condiments station is in a horrible location when it is busy you have to butt through a line of people. The food is still good but the vibe just doesn't work for me anymore.

Just tried the New JERRY'S and Love it. The decor is super sweet and swanky. The food is excellent. Long line ups but worth the wait. I tried the Thai Peanut Chicken salad and had to share it - it was so filling. mmmm
