Belonging: The Paradox of Citizenship
What does it mean to belong? And- how do we belong? Who do we belong to?

Never has the world experienced greater movement of peoples from one country to another, from one continent to another. These seismic shifts in population have brought about huge challenges for all societies. Do these changes in population present the possibility of a new model for the structures of society? Can belonging encompass difference, dependence, and dislike, while upholding fundamental human rights. And what's the significance of the Canadian model, which emphasizes values, immigration, parliamentary democracy, and the rule of law?

These timely and controversial subjects are at the heart of former Governor General Adrienne Clarkson's 2014 Massey Lectures, Belonging: The Paradox of Citizenship. Clarkson masterfully chronicles the evolution of citizenship throughout the ages: from Aristotle and the Greeks to present-day modern citizenship based on values, consensus, and pluralism. In this series of provocative essays Adrienne Clarkson develops original scenarios for our reasons to feel we are both part of Canada, and part of every person who shares our land, our values and our history.
